Senior Lecturer Dr Ian-Malcolm Rijsdijk has a chapter published in new book
Centre for Film and Media Studies Senior Lecturer Dr Ian-Malcolm Rijsdijk has a chapter published in the edited collection, Cinematic Settlers: The Settler Colonial World in Film (Routledge).
His chapter, "Between Sherwood Forest and the Red Sea: Settler Colonial South Africa in Early Hollywood", discusses how early Hollywood filmmakers staged South Africa on locations around California drawing on British colonial fantasies of adventure, the discovery of diamonds and gold, and mythologized representations of Zulus. These films showed a South Africa that had very little to do with the reality of the country, its people and its places. Instead Hollywood recreated the world in America in order to take America to the world.
