Seminar: Transformation of the media landscape through digitization of communication
On Tuesday 4 September, Prof. Dr. Jens Wendland, from the Dialogue of Civilizations Research Institute in Berlin will present at our CFMS seminar on "The transformation of the media landscape through digitization of communication." The lecture aims to discuss the radical change of a media society due to digitization, with a focus on the German media landscape as an example. Newspapers, radio and television are constitutionally anchored in the German constitution and regulated by law and media politics. First, the new technical possibilities of cable and satellite, then the Internet, have altered the order of the media: from the coexistence of public broadcasting and the private commercial press, to a dual broadcasting system. The digitization of media has led to a new structure of communication in Germany.
The lecture describes the development and the prospect for new digital media as well as the future perspectives of communication with as main points of focus technical and economic change, the altered use of the media and their legal framework. The digitization of the media landscape in Germany is embedded within the globalization of media world-wide, which also extends to social change. The lecture is therefore also intended to deal in general with digitalization around the world and the question whether and to what extent the international discourse about digitization shifts from an American-dominated digitization to a new multipolarity of the digital future.
