Professor Herman Wasserman’s New Book
Professor Herman Wasserman’s new book, The Ethics of Engagement: Media, Conflict and Democracy in Africa, has just been published.
The book, published by Oxford University Press, combines journalism theory, cultural studies, and political studies as theoretical frameworks to investigate the role of the media in democratization conflicts on the continent. Bringing together a range of examples of the democratization conflicts from different countries, Wasserman evaluates existing normative frameworks for the media and proposes a new framework, “an ethics of listening”.
The Ethics of Engagement: Media, Conflict and Democracy in Africa is Wasserman’s third monograph, in addition to several edited volumes. His previous book, Media, Geopolitics, and Power: A View from the Global South was awarded the UCT Vice-Chancellor’s Book Award for 2020. He is currently working on a co-edited volume (with Dani Madrid-Morales from the University of Houston) on misinformation in the Global South, to be published by Wiley-Blackwell later this year.
