Higher Education Today Wins 2 Telly’s!

9 Jun 2020 - 09:15

The Stepping Stone Outreach programme started in 2012 as a way to provide aspiring filmmakers with the knowledge, skills, and equipment needed to start their own video productions. Hosted by The Centre for Film and Media Studies (CFMS) and UCT Television (UCT TV), the Stepping Stone Multi-cam Course takes place between June and July and in the 2nd week of their modules participants have the opportunity to plan and shoot a talk show.

Higher Education Today, a television talk show hosted by educational consultant Steven Roy Goodman, has collaborated with UCT TV every second year since 2013 and in June 2019, he decided to collaborate once more with UCT TV’s Stepping Stone group to produce a new series of episodes on South African Higher Education. 2 of the 5 segments filmed during this round of Stepping Stone won Telly Awards!

Higher Education Today ‘Storytelling’ won a Bronze Telly Award in the History category. It featured guests: Omar Badsha, a photographer, artist, and founder of the South African History Online; Mae Sithole, a pan-african musician; and Stephen "Sugar" Segerman, protagonist of "Searching for Sugar Man" and former owner of Mabu Vinyl.

Higher Education Today 'Connections with Ancestors' won a Bronze Telly Award in the Cultural category. This episode invited three women to talk about connections with ancestors, namely Heather MacAlister, a Genealogical Researcher at Ancestors South Africa; Bonita Bennett, Director of the District Six Museum; and Christie van Zyl, a traditional healer.

Higher Education Today has won many Telly Awards for addressing contemporary education issues. The 2015 episode “Curriculum Changes” won in the political/commentary category, and the episode “Musical about Miriam Makeba” won two bronze Telly Awards in the cultural and political/commentary categories.

The Telly Awards annually showcase the best work created within television and across video, for all screens. Receiving over 12,000 entries from all 50 states and 5 continents, Telly Award winners represent work from some of the most respected advertising agencies, television stations, production companies, and publishers from around the world.

Congratulations to all the Stepping Stone students who made these segments possible.
