Dr Julia Cain

Lecturer of Screen Production and Film and Television Studies

Julia Cain is a lecturer at the Centre for Film and Media Studies at the University of Cape Town where she works primarily with the screen production students at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.  She convenes the honours documentary production course that produced the 2019 SAFTA-award winning documentary for Best Student Film and a 2020 current nomination and also convenes the honours documentary theory and creative media project courses.

Julia completed her D(Phil) at Stellenbosch University on using film and video as tools for social change and undertook a participatory video project as part of her action-research.  She concurrently started her own production company, Wide Eye Video, which specialised in educational video for local and international NGOs and government.

Previously, Julia completed undergraduate degrees in International Relations and Film Production in Canada, after which she moved to South Africa and ran her own training and communication company in the Eastern Cape providing services in rural communities. 

Julia has also lectured film studies courses at Stellenbosch University and the University of the Western Cape.

Her research interests include South African documentary, creative collaboration, participation and authorship as well as South African and African cinema more generally.
