Africa Cinema Unit
The Centre for Film and Media Studies is committed to promoting the study of African Cinemas, taking account of the richness and diversity of the film cultures that have emerged from the countries that make up this vast and complex continent.
- We offer a third-year course in African Cinemas that introduces students to the work of directors such as Djibril Diop Mambety, Youssef Chahine, Gaston Kabore, Ousmane Sembene and Gillo Pontecorvo. The course examines contemporary issues in African cinemas, including cinema in South Africa during and after apartheid.
- During 2009, we aim to establish an ongoing seminar in African Cinemas to which we shall invite a wide variety of respected scholars in the field.
- Postgraduate research is warmly encouraged on topics in the history, theory, aesthetics and criticism of African cinemas from 1900 to the present.
- UCT's African Studies library has built up an impressive collection of films by African cineastes as well as books on African film. The collection continues to grow.
